The Best Things To Do On The Oregon Coast

I am completely drawn to the Oregon Coast. It is a breathtaking area with a million things to see. There are beaches, rainforests, shipwrecks, cute coastal towns, waterfalls, sand dunes, and wildlife. If you love to hike but are drawn to the beach, then you will love this awesome itinerary of things to do on the Oregon Coast. I name all the cool spots as well as places to stay and places to eat. You will fall in love with this fantastic state and will want to come back every year. I know I do!

What To Pack

Ok, when it comes to packing, it all depends on what you will be doing. If you will be walking down the beach and stopping at viewpoints, all you need is a warm jacket and rain jacket. If you are like me and love to hike or do more strenuous activities, then check out what to pack below.

Hiking

1. Sunscreen: Super important and it is part of the ten essentials!  >Buy Sunscreen

3. Hiking Boots/Shoes: If you use tennis shoes, you can easily hurt your toes by hitting a rock by accident (Trust me, I have done it so many times before). Also, the trails on the coast are extremely muddy. >Check Out My Hiking Shoes
4. Hiking socks: Having the correct socks helps you prevent getting blisters. Smart Wool is probably my favorite brand out there. >Buy Hiking Socks
5. Water Reservoir: Water reservoirs help prevent me from getting dehydrated while hiking. The great thing about this reservoir is that it doesn’t have the plastic taste. >Here Is My Water Reservoir
6. Water: Stay nice and hydrated.
7. Sunglasses: It can get sunny all year round, so make sure to pack some sunglasses. >Check Out These Sunglasses
8. Snacks: The best snacks are jerky, nuts, and energy bars. Clif Bars are great for hiking

12. Headlamp: A headlamp is an absolute must in case you get stranded in the dark! It is a lot more portable and easier to use than a flashlight. >Buy A Headlamp Now
13. Leggings or Hiking Pants: I always wear leggings while hiking because it is what I feel most comfortable with! >Click For My Favorite Hiking Leggings
14. Breathable sweat-wicking shirts: Cotton shirts soak up your sweat when hiking, so make sure to wear something breathable. >Check out this awesome breathable shirt here.
15. Mid Base Layer: If you are hiking in the winter, this might be a great idea. >Check Out My Sweater Here

17. Jacket: I always have a jacket in my backpack, even if it is hot. I do it just in case of an emergency.  >Buy My Favorite Jacket
18. Rain Jacket: The worst feeling in the world is being wet and cold while hiking. You can get hypothermia, so always carry a poncho or a rain jacket when you hike in Oregon. >Check Out My Rain Jacket Here
19. Tripod: This is an optional item, but it is excellent for getting the ideal sunset pictures. >Check out this tripod

Permits

• America The Beautiful: This is the permit I use for all the national forests and national parks. >>>Buy It Here
• Northwest Forest Pass: I don’t have this permit because it does not include national parks, only national forests. If you think you will never go to national parks then I would get this pass. >>>Buy It Here
• Oregon Pacific Coast Passport: If you are visiting any of the state parks in Oregon, then you need to purchase this passport. You can buy it at any of the state park visitors center. You can read more about the passport here.

Best Time To Go To The Oregon Coast

The best time to visit this wonderful area is all year long! Yup, you heard that right! We ended up exploring around Thanksgiving, and even though it was chilly at times, we were very comfortable.

• Winter: Temperatures range from the high-30s to the high-40s on average during December, January, and February. The main draw to come during this time is the winter storms that are fantastic to watch. Make sure to bring a warm jacket and rain jacket.
• Spring: Temperatures range from the high-50s to the low-40s, so it’s still relatively chilly during this time of the year. This is a great time to visit because there are fewer crowds. It can be a rainy time, but there can be days where there is a lot of sun.
• Summer: Temperatures fluctuate between the high-60s and mid-50s, and there is very little rain. But the fantastic weather brings in the big crowds.
• Fall: Temperatures range from the low-60s to the mid-40s, and the weather is typically fantastic, which makes this the second busiest time to visit.

Can I Drive On The Beach

You cannot drive on most of the Oregon Beaches. However, there are certain beaches where you can. There are usually signs letting you know if you can drive on the beach or not, and it can also depend on the seasons. You can read more about driving on the beaches here.

Where To Stay On The North Coast

• Surfsand Resort(Cannon Beach): This is where we stayed the first time we came to Cannon Beach. They have oceanfront rooms and a heated indoor swimming pool and hot tub. I enjoyed our stay here, and I loved that we could walk easily to the beach. >>>Check It Out Here
• Inn at Cape Kiwanda (Pacific City): All rooms feature a balcony with an ocean view. Free beach cruiser bikes are available for guests, and it is pet friendly. >>>Check It Out Here

Fort Stevens State Park

This fantastic park near Astoria was once a site for the military to guard the Columbia River Gorge. It was in service from the Civil War to World War II. Now it is a 4,300-acre park with lakes, beaches, trails, camping, and a shipwreck.

The Peter Iredale Shipwreck was high on my list when visiting this park. The wreck occurred on October 25, 1906, and the ship was stripped for scrap instead of towed. It now remains on the coastline for people to enjoy. This is a great spot for the whole family to explore, and there is plenty of beach to walk for a few hours.

Things To Do In Seaside Oregon

Seaside Beach is more of a commercial area. There are many restaurants, shops, and bars to enjoy. Sadly when we went, everything was closed due to Covid, so we enjoyed a nice walk around the beach. Even with shops closed, many people were still walking around and enjoying themselves and having a fun beach day.

Ecola State Park

I really enjoyed Ecola State Park. I wish I had known about this area when I first visited Cannon Beach years ago. It has fantastic views of the coastline, great trails, and laidback beaches.

Ecola Point

The Ecola Point should be the first area you stop at when you visit the park. You have views of the lovely Cannon Beach in the distance and there are many picnic tables in the area to enjoy lunch.

Crescent Beach Trail

• Distance: 2 miles

One of the most unique things to do on the Oregon coast is this hike. Crescent Beach Trail was probably my favorite hike on this Oregon Coast road trip. The hike wasn’t easy, and it got my heart pumping in some areas, but those are the types of hikes I love! It was a little muddy in some areas, so bring some good hiking boots. We decided to do this hike in the morning to avoid crowds, and we were rewarded with having the beach to ourselves. We walked around and enjoyed the waves and sea stacks in the distance. My dog loved sprinting across the desolate beach.

Indian Beach

This is a low key, fun beach that is popular with surfers and beachgoers. You can easily spend a few hours relaxing and enjoying the waves.

Clatsop Loop Trail

• Distance: 2.8 miles
• Elevation Gain: 784 ft

• Difficulty: Moderate

This trail features a lighthouse, cliffs, and beaches. Be warned that the trail on the west side is very muddy, so bring good hiking shoes. The trail on the east side is less muddy, but the views are not as good.

Things To Do In Cannon Beach

Cannon Beach is probably my favorite Pacific Northwest beach I have seen. This place is a MUST VISIT on any Oregon Coast road trip. First of all, I love the town. The restaurants, houses, and local shops really make this place feel welcoming. People walk around the cute town easily on beautiful summer days.

Haystack Rock is, of course, breathtaking and a great spot for sunset. Let me warn you that there are usually many people on this beach, but the area is so large that it is easy to spread out.

Places To Eat

• Lazy Susan Cafe: A great breakfast place. Bring cash, though, as they do not accept credit cards.
• Pig And Pancake: Another fantastic spot for breakfast. I really enjoyed their taco omelet.
• The Oil And Vinegar Bar: I am all about helping local shops, and I am also obsessed with balsamic vinegar so, I bought some to add to my pantry.
• Cannon Beach Hardware And Public House: This is an interesting place. It is a hardware store and a restaurant.
• Cannon Beach Smokehouse: I really enjoyed their sandwiches. So good!
• The Wayfarer: We got a Thanksgiving meal from here, and it was delicious!

Hug Point

I almost didn’t go to Hug Point because I was tired and exhausted from a full day of hiking and walking. I am so glad I did not miss the sunset here because this area was stunning. The waterfall and caves really make this a fun area to explore with the whole family. Many families were having a nice picnic while watching the sunset. It was pretty easy to get to this area, and it didn’t really require any hard hiking.

Oswald West State Park

If you love hiking, then definitely visit this 2,484-acre park. This park includes rainforests, beaches, and miles of trails leading to breathtaking views of the coast. Short Sands beach is a popular and secluded beach many people love to hike to.

Tillamook Creamery

One of the best things to do in Tillamook, Oregon, is to stop by the famous creamery. Tillamook Creamery is well known in the Pacific Northwest, and I usually buy their cheeses at the grocery store. Their ice cream is well known by the locals, so even if you aren’t hungry for a full meal, definitely stop by and try out their famous ice cream.

Please Note: Due to covid, there have been many long lines at this factory. Many people have complained and have said it is not worth a visit while Covid restrictions are in place. But I have heard the ice cream line isn’t as bad as the tours and shop.

Cape Meares National Wildlife Refuge

Cape Meares National Wildlife Refuge is a pretty small but fun area to explore. We walked around with our two dogs and saw a lighthouse, octopus tree, and cliffside views. This is an easy stop and walk park. The Octopus tree was pretty cool to see as it is Oregon’s biggest spruce tree.

Cape Lookout State Park

Cape Lookout State Park is a pretty laid back park with fantastic campsite views. If we were camping, we definitely would have stayed at this park. It was pretty quiet and relaxed, and the campsites were right next to the beach. >>>You Can Make Reservations Here

There is a popular hike called the Cape Lookout Trail that most people do when they visit, but sadly it was closed when we went. Hopefully, when you go, you can experience the hike.

Sand Lake Recreation Area

You should have seen my husband’s face when we discovered this area. He loves off-roading, and this place is perfect for that. There were trucks, motorcycles, and four-wheelers, all driving around on the sand. There are, of course, requirements to drive, so look into that before heading down here. Cape Kiwanda

Cape Kiwanda is such a fun and beautiful beach to explore. You can drive on the beach up to a certain point. There are signs on where you can or cannot drive. When we were there, there were many vehicles parked and waiting for the sunset. Others had fires and picnics right next to their car. It is a fun family getaway, that is for sure.

Neskowin Beach

Neskowin Beach was probably my dog’s favorite beach. They loved walking and smelling around here. What I enjoyed about it was how relaxing it felt. There weren’t many people, and the views were fantastic. If you want to get away from crowds but still see some fantastic sea stacks, visit Neskowin Beach.

Drift Creek Falls Trail

• Distance: 3.2 miles
• Elevation Gain: 541 ft
• Route Type: Out And Back
• Difficulty: Easy

Drift Creek Falls is not technically part of the Oregon Coast but I had to add it in because it is very close to highway 101 and I also really enjoyed this trail. So if you are ok with veering off a little to see a wonderful waterfall then go for it! I loved this waterfall. because it was easy, quick, and had a fantastic bridge.

Rocky Creek State Scenic Viewpoint

The Rocky Creek Viewpoint is a must-stop! The dreamy green grass and the waves crashing against the cliff really gave me Ireland vibes. I also loved the spring flowers. You can also do a short walk over to Whale Cove and get even more spectacular views.

Devils Punchbowl State Natural Area

This is a nice quick stop to take a photo of the fantastic Devils Punchbowl. If you are lucky there might not be water in the bowl and you can explore the area even future. Since there was water we definitely did not explore as it seemed a little dangerous.

Cape Perpetua Lookout

I was a little worried when we drove up to Cape Perpetua Scenic Area as there was a cloud looming over us while we drove up the crazy winding road, but luckily when we arrived the cloud was gone and we got these fantastic views! I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this lookout! It was wonderful!

Devil’s Churn Scenic Overlook

The Devils Churn Area is a great place to explore! There is a short trail that takes you down to the beach where we took the pictures shown above. I loved witnessing the waves crashing as well as the mossy green majestic area. It was such a fun short hike. If you are looking for a short fun adventure then definitely check this place out.

Thor’s Well

Thors well is another short but fun hike. The trail takes you to the beach where there is a cute bridge and of course the main attraction: Thors Well. This place can get pretty crowded and finding parking can be a pain but it is worth it.

Heceta Head Lighthouse

Heceta Head Lighthouse is a fantastic stop for the whole family. There were so many people here enjoying their time on the beach sunbathing, playing in sand, and in the water. You can hike up to the cute lighthouse and take pictures of it or just relax on the beach.

Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area

The Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area is huuuuge! This is a great spot to stop if you want to experience dune buggies or ATV’s. You can rent them here.

Sunset Beach

This is another fun area for the whole family. There were so many families here enjoying the day and walking around the beach.

Cape Arago Lighthouse Viewpoint

If you are keen to see another lighthouse then make sure to stop here at Cape Arago Lighthouse Viewpoint. I will warn you that the lighthouse is pretty far away and even with my nice lens, it was difficult to capture this beauty. But if you have a telephoto lens I would give it a shot!

Shore Acres State Park Garden

I know this is so random but there is a FREE garden to explore on the Oregon Coast. This wonderful garden has roses, azaleas, a cute pond, and wonderful bushes. I loved it! You also don’t need to pay to explore this wonderful place. Since I love flowers this was a nice pit stop on our long Oregon Coast journey. If you are looking for a break from looking at the ocean, then make sure to stop here.

Simpson Reef Overlook

When I first laid eyes on the Simpson Reef Overlook I thought I was staring at boulders. At first I wasn’t too impressed but then a lady next to us told us to take a closer look with her binoculars. We were so surprised that the rocks were filled with seals! Hundreds of them! It was so wonderful to see! If you want to spot some seals on this trip then this is a great place to see them. Just bring some binoculars as the haystacks are a little too far.

Cape Arago State Park

Cape Arago is another wonderful lookout with fantastic evergreen trees and rocks jutting out of the beach.

Coquille Point and Face Rock State Scenic Viewpoint

These viewpoints are perfect for sunset! The amount of sea stacks in this area is insane! There are stairs where you can get down to the beach or you can take pictures from above as we did. Hopefully, you have better luck with the weather. We were here for sunset and sunrise and it rained both times.

Boice-Cope Park

Boice Cope is a fantastic place for anyone that wants to do some water recreation activities. Many people come here to windsurf or kitesurf on the stunning lake. You can rent the surfing equipment here and even get some lessons. There are also campsites here and you can make reservations to the campground here.

Cape Blanco Lighthouse

I really enjoyed this wonderful lighthouse. The surrounding views here are fantastic and the lighthouse is beautiful! I mainly enjoyed seeing the beautiful sea stack with the coast next to it! This is a great spot to take pictures at.

Kissing Rock At Gold Beach

You need to stop by Gold Beach on this road trip! I really enjoyed exploring around the area around Kissing Rock. This area has a ton of restaurants so this is such a great place to stop and rest. Pro tip: I recommend eating at Barnacle Bistro! Such good food! I loved the curry mussels.

Myers Creek Beach Viewpoint

This is probably one of my favorite beaches on the coast. It is underrated and filled with a huge amount of sea stacks! There were people lounging around, walking around, or just playing with the sand. It is such a beautiful area.

Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor

Natural Bridges

This Instagram-worthy spot is so dreamy and beautiful to witness for yourself but I will warn you that it is sketch! Even with good hiking boots, I was a little unnerved. So please bring good shoes with a good grip. Even with the sketchiness I still feel like this is an Oregon coast must see.

Ok, so if you don’t want to do anything too sketchy you can definitely see the natural bridges. You just have to take a left when you are at the parking lot and you will get an easy viewpoint of the bridges.

If you want the pictures shown above you will need to turn right when you are at the parking lot (if you are facing the park). There is a path that goes around the trees so follow that path.

There will be two forks on the path. Turn left on both. After the last left is when the trail becomes super steep. Go slow and take your time. If it is muddy, or icy, I wouldn’t even attempt it.

Whaleshead Beach

If you want a beach that is similar to Cannon Beach but has no crowds then you need to check out Whaleheads Beach! It is absolutely breathtaking! There is a sea stack that looks similar to Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach so take advantage. It was such a dream having this whole beach pretty much to ourselves! I highly recommend it.

House Rock Viewpoint

I am not going to lie. I was not too impressed with this lookout but if you have some extra time check it out.

Cape Ferrelo Viewpoint

Another great lookout on the Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor! You don’t need much time to take in the fantastic views at Cape Ferrelo Viewpoint. There are so many things to do at the Oregon coast!
