The first step to planning your whirlwind adventure on San Juan Island is knowing when to visit. Each season has its ups and downs, ultimately depending on what you’re looking for on your trip. That said, a safe bet is summer leading up to early fall. The weather is nice and warm and perfect for the outdoors and enjoying the scenery.

For the purpose of variety, let’s break down each season’s pros and cons so you can make a more informed decision on the best time for you.

Spring on the San Juan Islands

March — May

Island life on the San Juan Islands is booming in spring, and with the mild weather and winter melt, the wildflowers start to bloom in full force. The weather is a bit unpredictable, sunny on some days and rainy on others, but for the most part, it’s enjoyable. You can expect average daily highs anywhere between 50°F (10°C) and 64°F (18°C). 

Spring is a great time to visit San Juan and other islands for outdoor activities like day hiking, sea kayaking, and wildlife watching. Whale-watching enthusiasts will find plenty of opportunities to spot these majestic creatures, though the summer months offer more frequent sightings.

Summer on the San Juan Islands

June — August

The summer months are a bit warmer than other times of the year, and that’s likely why it’s one of the most popular times to visit San Juan Island. Daily average highs range from 66°F (19°C) to 72°F (22°C), but on rare occasions it can reach the 90s. 

You’ll be able to enjoy most outdoor activities to the fullest, like catching some sun at the beach and the usual hikes and watersports. Summer is also the best time for whale-watching, where you can spot anything from humpback whales, orca whales, or gray whales. It’s also great for visiting county parks, including Lime Kiln State Park.

Fall on the San Juan Islands

September — November

If you’re a fan of cooler weather, slightly fewer crowds, and an absolute abundance of produce in farmer’s markets sprawled across San Juan and other islands, then fall is for you. Daily highs range between 50°F (10°C) and 66°F (19°C), so be sure to pack some warm clothes. 

It’s a beautiful time to enjoy stunning views from a seaplane or Washington State ferry. The temperatures are similar to springtime, so hiking, biking, and other outdoor adventures are still on the table.

However, since fall is harvest season on the San Juan Islands, things to do largely revolve around the incredible food and drinks. Farmer’s markets are packed with fresh fall produce. Breweries and vineyards are also open for tastings, offering plenty of ciders, beers, wines, and more.

Winter on the San Juan Islands

December — February

Like most vacation destinations, winter offers a calm experience and a nice break from the usual hustle and bustle of the tourist crowds. This means that almost everything is cheaper and you’ll have an easier time accessing some places. Everything from breweries, vineyards, and restaurants to spas and ferry lines will be less crowded.

Luckily, the weather doesn’t get too cold, with average daily highs of around 45°F (7°C) or 46°F (8°C). Still, if you find this a bit too chilly for your liking, this is a great time to take advantage of museums like the Whale Museum or the San Juan Islands Art Museum.

How Much Time to Spend on San Juan Island

Any time spent on San Juan Island will be worthwhile, but if you want an all-encompassing experience, a long weekend of three days is sufficient because of how small the island is. You’ll get to experience a good variety of locations and activities without feeling rushed. 

That said, you can’t go wrong with spending a few extra days to better understand everything the island offers. If visiting San Juan Island alone isn’t enough, consider island hopping. You can spend at least five days exploring the four main islands — San Juan Island, Orcas Island, Lopez Island, and Shaw Island.

How to Get to San Juan Island

There are two main ways to get to San Juan Island from the mainland, so it depends on your preferred method of travel.

The first and most common way is to travel via the Washington State Ferry. The ferry departs from Anacortes, Washington, and travels to Friday Harbor on San Juan Island. Anacortes is around 90 minutes away from Seattle and Vancouver in British Columbia. The travel schedule can be found on the Washington State Department of Transportation site, so have a peek at the Ferry running times. The ferry is one-way, so taking a boat ride directly from Seattle is also a great option. 

The second best method to get to San Juan Island is by air. Most fly out from Seattle to the Port of Friday Harbor Airport via a seaplane or a regular flight. The travel distance varies, but you can expect a flight of around 45 or 50 minutes one way. Seaplane tickets can be booked on various websites, including Kenmore Air and Viator, so make sure to pick the option that’s best for you.  

Where to Stay on San Juan Island

Right — once you’ve figured out your travel and transportation plans, you’ll be looking for a place to rest your weary head. Luckily, there are plenty of places to stay on the island that cover a broad range of budgets and styles, from inns to top-notch hotels.

Budget | The Orca Inn

If you’re working with a smaller budget, you can still find this incredible accommodation in Friday Harbor. The Orca Inn offers some simple but comfortable rooms, each with a microwave, fridge, TV, and a private bathroom. You’ll also have some air conditioning and access to Wi-Fi from pretty much anywhere.

Mid-Range | Earthbox Inn & Spa

Another fantastic option for where to stay, also in Friday Harbor, is the Earthbox Inn & Spa. It’s a little pricier but still gives excellent value for money, especially considering all that’s included in your stay. Choose either queen, king, or deluxe rooms, with one or two beds in each room. The rooms are all stunning, with a simple but modern design, not to mention incredibly comfortable.

You’ll have access to all the usual amenities, including a fridge and microwave, air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and coffee and tea-making facilities. For those warmer days, you can take a dip in the indoor pool, or for a more relaxing experience, take advantage of the hot tub. There’s even a fitness center available to all guests.

Luxury | Bird Rock Hotel

Bird Rock Hotel is definitely the place for a more luxurious experience on San Juan Island. If you decide to spare a pretty penny at this hotel, you won’t be disappointed. The rooms are nice and spacious, decorated with a beautiful modern style, and are super comfortable. 

These private suites have their own bathroom, free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, a coffee machine, toiletries, and a large flatscreen TV. Most rooms also have a balcony, so you can take in gorgeous harbor views and the deep blue waters.  

The hotel doesn’t have its own pool, but the views and proximity to the harbor make up for that. You can rent kayaks at Crystal Seas Kayaking, which is right next door. Camping at San Juan County Park

There aren’t many camping options on San Juan Island, but state parks and some resorts are always a safe bet. Apart from Lime Kiln State Park and the private campground at Lakedale Resort, San Juan County Park is your best option.

There are 31 sites to choose from throughout the park, accommodating a maximum of eight people per campsite. Apart from the splendor of nature and the sunset views, there is also a beach for you to stroll along and catch some sun.

1. Go Whale-Watching Around the Island

When visiting San Juan Island or any other islands in the archipelago, don’t miss out on whale-watching. The waters surrounding the islands are home to several different whale species, including humpbacks, gray, minkes, and orca whales. These majestic creatures are one of the highlights of the San Juan Islands, and it’s no surprise why.

There are different ways to go whale-watching, either by boat, onshore, or at the Whale Museum. Boat-based whale-watching tours are great for getting up close and personal with them in their natural habitat. Tour operators will take you to all the best hotspots to see the whales, and sightings aren’t always guaranteed. 

If you aren’t a fan of boats, you can visit some local spots to catch a glimpse. Lime Kiln State Park, nicknamed Whale Watch Park, is one of the best spots on the island to go whale-watching. And even if you don’t get lucky enough to spot whales during your stay, the Whale Museum in downtown Friday Harbor is worth a trip.

2. Visit American Camp

History buffs are going to love visiting American Camp. Found on the south of the island, American Camp was once the sight of occupation for the US Army between 1859 and 1874. What remains today are fascinating historic sites, including the Redoubt fortress and prairies, and plenty of fun spots for visitors.

The visitor’s center has a bookshop, exhibits that detail the location, and information on ranger-led programs. From there, you can stroll down to Grandma’s Cove or South Beach and enjoy some sun while gazing toward the Olympic Mountains and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. 

The list of things to do doesn’t stop there. You can go biking, hiking, or kayaking, but check the visitor’s center for the allocated areas. Wildlife lovers will also have a grand time spotting the animals scattered across the region, like red foxes, sea mammals, and over 200 migratory bird species, including bald eagles. 

3. Visit English Camp

Much like the previous location, English Camp is a site of great historical significance. Armies from the US and Great Britain had occupied the island simultaneously, and this location was where the Royal Marines had settled their camp. Some buildings, a garden, and a cemetery remain from the time, but the area has since been revamped for visitors.

The views in English Camp are exceptional on their own, letting you venture onto the Garrison Bay shoreline to enjoy the stunning garden. There’s a small visitor’s center and some hiking trails to try, including a short and easy one up to Young Hill. 

The real kicker, though, happens on Saturdays. Between June and August, on every Saturday, volunteers gather and host reenactments of what life was like at the camp in the 19th century. It’s a real treat for history nerds but incredibly interesting for all visitors.

4. Go to Cattle Point Lighthouse

Another must-do on San Juan Island is visiting Cattle Point Lighthouse in Friday Harbor, which is part of the San Juan Islands National Monument. Constructed in 1935, the lighthouse is nestled on the edge of the shoreline and offers one of the best locations to take in the views. Look over the Salish Sea, watch the golden hues of the sunset, or even see some wildlife in action, including deer, birds, seals, and sea lions. 

You can walk along the shores of the beach below or take advantage of the area for a picturesque picnic. In springtime, the wildflowers bloom across the grass fields surrounding the lighthouse, creating a beautiful scene. Plus, the short trail up to the lighthouse is easy to traverse, so you don’t need to be an avid hiker to enjoy it.

5. Visit Lime Kiln Point State Park

Lime Kiln Point is one of the best locations in the San Juan Islands and highlights so much of what the islands are famous for. For one, the park is nicknamed Whale Watch Park due to the common occurrences of whales in the waters nearby, particularly orcas. It’s considered one of the best whale-watching spots in the world, and that’s saying something.

There is plenty to do at the park, including numerous hikes, bird-watching opportunities, kayaking spots, and, of course, whale-watching. You should also consider taking a walk to Lime Kiln Lighthouse. As far as views and lookouts go, Lime Kiln Lighthouse is one of the absolute best.

6. Explore San Juan Island’s Friday Harbor 

On San Juan Island, activities are centered in Friday Harbor, which isn’t surprising — it’s like the island’s heart. Apart from some of the other places mentioned on this list, like Lime Kiln or American Camp, there is so much more that the town of Friday Harbor offers. It encompasses an approximately 1.23 square mile area and has no shortage of activities.

You can do anything from exploring the quaint bookstores or boutiques to admiring the fantastic architecture and brickwork around the town. Consider visiting the Whale Museum, the San Juan Islands Museum of Art, or walking along the waterfront. The San Juan Historical Museum is also a must-see.

7. See Alpacas at Krystal Acres

You probably didn’t think you’d add “alpaca farm” to your list of places to visit, right? Situated on the island’s western side, close to Friday Harbor and Roche Harbor Resort, Krystal Acres is home to the largest alpaca herd in the San Juan Islands. It’s one of those great places to visit for the whole family. 

The farm is gorgeous, sporting the same natural beauty that the rest of the island has. You can enjoy an educational guided tour by booking beforehand or just take a walk on your own. Once you’ve learned all you can about the farm and the animals, you should take a trip to the Farm Store to buy cute gifts and items. Whether it’s clothing, accessories, toys, or small trinkets, the store has it all.

8. Embark on a Sea Kayaking Adventure

Being an island, there’s no way you can visit San Juan without trying your hand at some kayak tours or lone-kayak adventures. There are plenty of places across San Juan, like Roche Harbor,  to give kayaking a go.

On the island’s northwest side, you’ll come across another fabulous place called Roche Harbor. It’s like its own little community and has so many amazing things to get up to, perfect for any visitor on the island.

Roche Harbor has some picturesque views of the marina and nearby islands, beautiful architecture and buildings to admire, and lush forests surrounding the area. For a bit of a change of pace, you should spend some time walking along the docks and looking out at the boats floating nearby.

You can also visit one of the restaurants in Roche Harbor, like McMillin’s Dining Room or Lime Kiln Cafe, for some tasty food to fill your belly. There is also the San Juan Island distillery to check out and some gift shops where you can get souvenirs. 

If that isn’t enough, visit the harbor’s best-kept secret, San Juan Island Sculpture Park, which showcases over 150 outdoor local art pieces. 

10. Indulge in Wine Tasting at San Juan Vineyard

If you’re a wine-lover, you’ll be pleased to know that San Juan teems with places to go wine tasting, including Cin Cin Tasting Room, Madrone Cellars and Ciders, and Archipelago Beverage Company. That said, San Juan Vineyard on Roche Harbor Road has to be the best of the lot, so if you only have time for one visit, this is the go-to.

The vineyard encompasses over 30 acres and has some really gorgeous views, not to mention an adorable little chapel to admire. It’s a popular location for weddings and events, but the main selling point is the wine (obviously) in Siegerrebe and Madeleine Angevine varieties. Be sure to visit the tasting room and for a single or group wine tasting.

11. Go Beer Tasting at the San Juan Island Brewery

If all you want to do after a long day is have a seat at a local pub and grab a drink, then San Juan Island Brewery is the place to do it. The pub is open from Wednesday through Monday between 11 AM and 8 PM, so be sure to plan your day’s events around those times, because you can’t miss out on the food and drinks.

Depending on the time of year, there will be different brews available, whether you want some ales, beers, or ciders. They’re each unique and represent the season, which is likely why the brewery is so popular. 

Now, don’t forget about the food. As they say, pub grub is the way to go, and you can find anything here, from corndogs, salads, or loaded fries to pizzas, burgers, and desserts. One thing is for sure — you’ll leave here with a full belly and a smile.

12. Grab a Bite at Westcott Bay Shellfish Co.

Remember those restaurants in Friday Harbor that were mentioned earlier? Well, Westcott Bay Shellfish Co. is home to one called Tide Tables and has some of the best fresh seafood you’ll find on the island. Westcott itself is actually a shellfish farm where you can purchase local specialties, including clams, oysters, and mussels. 

The lunch menu, unsurprisingly, has a gorgeous mix of grilled, raw, or BBQ-style seafood or even some dishes slathered in flavored butter. They also serve locally baked goods, including fresh bread, as well as some fabulous, crisp wines and brilliant beers for you to sip on. Plus, if you have a sweet tooth, there are a couple of desserts on the menu.

Avid hikers will be happy to know that San Juan Island has some beautiful locations for hiking, including this one. The trail is moderately difficult and takes almost two hours to complete, but it’s well worth it. You’ll trek past grassy fields, forests of lush trees and vegetation, and pass along a beach where you can look out into the vast waters.

The views are amazing, and you might even be lucky and spot some wildlife, from deer and foxes, and a whale in the distance, though don’t cross your fingers for that, as they’re scarce.

14. Catch Some Sun on the Beach

When it comes to its shoreline, San Juan Island is admirable. It’s home to some of the best Washington beaches in the state and the Pacific Northwest. That means your San Juan Islands vacation would be wasted if you didn’t visit the fantastic beaches.  

South Beach, in American Camp, is by far one of the most popular beaches on the island. You’ll behold some incredible views here, including Juan de Fuca, Haro Strait, and the Olympic Mountains in the distance. 

There are just a handful of beaches besides South Beach for you to visit, including Jackson Beach, 4th of July Beach, Grandma’s Cove, and Eagle Cove. Each beach has its own charm, so try visiting more than one (or all of them).

Susie’s Mopeds in Friday Harbor offers electric bikes, electric and regular mopeds, but the standouts are the so-called “scoot coupes.” They’re basically a two-seater moped shaped like a little Mario Kart (adorable, really), so be sure to take advantage of the island’s scenic routes. 

Can You Swim in the Water at the San Juan Islands?

You can, but it’s all dependent on where you go. The lakes on the island are always a good option, especially at places like Lakedale and Egg Lake. Beautiful Grandma’s Cove (or Granny’s Cove) is another good option. This small beach in American Camp is shallow and warm, so many people love swimming there.

However, if you’re taking a trip down to South Beach, you won’t always be able to swim. While it’s a great place for sunbathing and enjoying the beach vibe, swimming isn’t a top activity. The waters can be quite choppy, and there are a lot of rocks, making it unsafe. 

What Time of Year Do You See Orcas in the San Juan Islands?
