Hiking Guide: Mount Fremont Lookout Trail Description
Now that the basics are out of the way, let’s dive into a comprehensive guide to hiking this trail. Traversing through subalpine meadows, crossing rocky ridges, and offering stunning views of mountains, this trail leads to one of the most scenic Fire Lookouts in Washington.
Hike the Sourdough Ridge Trail to Frozen Lake
Your trek begins at the parking lot in the Sunrise Area. Before heading off, you should stop by the Sunrise Visitor Center, open from July through September, to get a map, grab some food or water at the Snack Bar, and perhaps use the restrooms before starting your hike.
From the parking lot, follow the Sourdough Ridge Trail through the grassy meadows of the Mount Rainier Wilderness. This part of the hike is relatively easy, with gradual inclines and sweeping views of Mount Rainier and other nearby peaks such as Antler and Marcus.
At about 2.8 miles into the Sourdough Ridge Trail, you’ll arrive at Frozen Lake. As you approach Frozen Lake, you’ll notice the landscape begin to change—what was once a lush flower-filled meadow gives way to more rugged, rocky terrain.
Frozen Lake is a beautiful spot to take a break, take some photos, or simply catch your breath before taking on the last leg of the hike. If you’re not keen on hiking much, you can end your trek at Frozen Lake. The hike to Frozen Lake via Sourdough Ridge Trail is quite scenic, giving you views of Mount Rainier throughout.
Hike From Frozen Lake Junction to Mt. Fremont Fire Lookout
After admiring the scenery at the lake, continue hiking along the Sourdough Trail towards the Frozen Lake Junction. This junction connects various trails, namely, the Wonderland Trail, the Burroughs Mountain Trail, and, of course, the Mount Fremont Lookout Trail.
Join the last one and begin a more challenging trek to the lookout. This section is steeper and rockier, but the effort is well worth it. The trail has less shade than the first leg, so bring lots of water and sun protection.
As you gain elevation, you’ll start to catch glimpses of the Fire Lookout in the distance, perched atop a rocky outcrop. The anticipation builds as you get closer, and before you know it, you’re standing at the base of this historic structure.
The Fire Lookout is surrounded by some of the most stunning views in the park. On a clear day, you can spot Grand Park, Berkeley Park, Skyscraper Mountain, and Redstone Peak.

Mount Fremont Fire Tower Location and Entry
Built in 1934, the Mount Fremont Fire Tower is located on the highest part of the national park, at over 14,000 feet above sea level. The historic structure is one of the few remaining fire lookouts in the national park and has been carefully preserved over the years.
It was once used by firewatchers to flag and report smoke and lightning strikes. Today, the lookout has become a popular destination for hikers and history buffs alike, serving as a vantage point for 360-degree views of the surrounding peaks and alpine landscapes.
If you do this hike when there’s a lot of cloud cover, then you won’t see much except for the floating mist. Otherwise, you can look forward to excellent views of Mt. Rainier, the Olympic Mountains, and the Cascade Range.
Note that you can’t enter the fire lookout, but you will have access to its platform, which still offers breathtaking vistas.
Tip: Bring a pair of binoculars for a chance to spot some mountain goats in Grand Park.
