The Co-Op Traverse 60 is an REI womens hiking pack for those on a budget who prefer all the benefits of a full-suspension pack. The pack was designed for large, heavy loads. The lightweight metal frame and efficient suspension when coupled together can carry weight effectively. The shoulder straps and waist belts are comfortable and adjustable, making those long trips much more pleasant.

REI included their Uplift 2.0 compression system, suspended and ventilated back panel, providing much support for carrying heavy loads. The Traverse’s back panel is a hybrid trampoline-style design with great ventilation, keeping the weight light.

The best feature of the pack was the J-shaped zipper accessing the main body of the pack. A J-shaped zipper allows access to the body of the pack in a duffel bag style. This feature is great for grabbing gear at the bottom of the pack but packing the gear initially. It is quite helpful.

One of the top benefits of the pack is that it is versatile in its uses. It can be used as a day pack or backpacking pack. The Octal has an excellent compression system but where differentiates itself is the removable floating lid, making the pack noticeably smaller. Do note; there is only one access point into the pack, so it is essential that you pack efficiently on those longer backpacking treks. Also, the pack has only a few pockets to organize your extra smaller gear.

Overall, this pack is best suited for short trips ranging from 2-3 day with a focus on lighter loads. This is the best lightweight backpack due to its well-positioned balance between weight and features desired by all adventurers.

From a first glance, the pack’s suspension system looks to be underwhelming due to the smaller shoulder and hip straps. Don’t let that fool you. The straps have the perfect amount of padding, but not too much keeping the weight of the pack itself down. Also, the compression straps are subtle but do a solid job keeping the contents in the bag close to you.

Where this pack shines is the innovative yet simple design. The pack has a few features that elevate its prominence. One, the U-shaped zipper allows the functionality of a duffle bag while still being a backpack. The second feature is the removable top lid which converts into a day pack. This feature is beneficial for day hikes, but it is not necessary to lug the whole backpack. This is one of the best women’s lightweight backpack on the list. Osprey has been designing great backpacks for years, and the Lumina is no exception. This pack incorporates the suspension system and comfort typical of Osprey, but they have seemed to outdo themselves by reducing weight dramatically.

The suspension system on the ultralight pack was minimal, as all ultralight backpacks are. However, the pack has a lightweight full aluminum frame and distributes the weight evenly from the hips to the shoulders. Moreover, the back panel feels like a trampoline on your back. Having some weight makes the suspension system more comfortable. The suspension system on the Lumina is similar to the Anti-Gravity suspension system on the Aura and Ariel if it slimmed up. Remember, this pack weighs 1 lb 12 oz, over 6 oz less than any other pack on this list!

The two most significant negatives on this pack are: one, it is 45 liters compared to other packs which are 55-65 liters; two, the pockets and organization are minimal.

The Lumina is best used for those who are traveling for 2-3 days, who are minimal packers, and hike quickly. The lack of space will force the hiker to pack minimally since it cannot hold much gear. It is also worth noting there is only one access point to the pack and pockets are limited. Keep in mind, the hiker will be comfortable with its suspension system, adjustable features, and last but not least, lightweight.

Overall, the Lumina can be considered one of the best ultralight backpacks for women on the market. But, its size will limit its potential as it will only be able to be used in defining circumstances.

The exclusion of certain features varies so be sure to check the specs on the pack. Another critique often communicated is it can get uncomfortable if the hiker is carrying a heavy amount of gear due to the lack of weight distribution and lack of padding.

Ultimately, the ultralight backpacks are great for shorter excursions with lighter amounts of gear.

Torso Measurement

After you found the backpack for you, it is time to fit your backpack to your body. Two measurements will be needed: torso length and waist size.

Torso Length – Not all but some packs are available in several sizes, from extra small to large. These ranges are in relation to torso length and vary by manufacturer and by gender. Be sure to check out the specs for details.
